I live in Texas and have just found out that a "friend"s child, age 13 has been allowed to quit school because she cant get along with other kids...no mental issues...what do I do? Is this not considered child neglect?

To clarify this a little...I know all the details of situation and child is not being homeschooled..there are some issues at home ..not child, but parents..alcohol and drug..and there are 2 younger siblings also, this child has been allowed to quit school because she had fight with old boyfriends new girlfriend, school district is looking for her but address given to school is address of grandparents who refuse to talk to school truancy officers. I have advised school truancy again that I can give them information and noone has been in contact. This parent thinks this is big joke...she thinks she is "beating" the system. You can only do so much, and I am just disgusted at system that has let it go this long. I spoke with school system today and was asked to call back on Tuesday when they were not so busy. This child has been allowed to make a decison that will affect her entire life..at 13. I feel like my hands are tied.

Where are the parents?

Is this like the dumbest thing a parent can do to their kid, or what? My son is only 5 and we've been home-schooling him for 4 years already!

You know, if you think about it, a 13-year-old who has to leave school for a reason like this might already have problems at home, especially in the discipline department. The only other thing I can think of is that the school is so bad that even good kids can't make it.

Why not just go to another school district?

Are you sure that there are no mental issues? No behavioral problems? What if the child is pregnant or was assaulted at school? Are you sure that the child is not being home-schooled or otherwise taught? There are so many things that could be occurring that you would not know about without being directly involved with the situation. Schools do not simply "let" parents withdraw kids without knowing there are other plans being made.

If you do not know all the facts, it is irresponsible to report this matter. If you do not know all the facts, it isn't any of your business.

It probably is not legal in Texas (or anywhere else for that matter) for a child that young to formally quit school. She has probably just stopped going, and yes, it is probably against the law. The school should report the extended absence to the proper authorities, but you could contact the local school board to report the situation.

Maybe the parents are homeschooling her? I had a friend once whose child was 12 and they took him out of school because he couldn't get along with the other kids. Turns out he has a learning disability and he was disrupting the other children. But his mom is now homeschooling him.

That's terrible. That's the worst parenting I've ever heard of. You could call CPS anonymously and express your concern for the well-being of that child. Just make sure they understand that it has to be anonymous.

Not if the parents enrolled her in homeschooling.
