There are actually a lot of very, very strong universties in California. The tops are Stanford, UC Berkeley, and then it depends on the major. Other extremely strong schools include UCLA and USC, as well as Claremont McKenna and CalTech, Harvey Mudd, and Pomona. Some of these schools are among the most selective in the US, and the world.

If you're in-state, you can not beat the value of UC Berkeley. It's an outstanding, elite level school, which is an unbelievable bargain.

If you want Ivy League, Stanford is your obvious choice.

If you're looking at smaller, elite liberal arts colleges, look at Pomona and Claremont McKenna.

If you want film, UCLA and USC have some of the best programs in the world.

If you want engineering, Berkeley, Harvey Mudd and CalTech are among the best of the best.
