The sexual repression is what causes the success of the porn industry. People (generally speaking) are either unable or unwilling to openly discuss their sexuality and desires here in the US. As an outlet for their pent-up frustrations, they turn to what they view as "secret" and "dirty" to fulfill their needs.
If we were more open with each other, and more importantly ourselves, we would be able to have better control of our more primal nature and not need to resort to pornography to fill the void.

I suspect but can't prove that there is a positive correlation between a sexually repressed society and the large scale consumption of porn.

I don't think it's so much that America is sexually repressed, more that it is shackled to the puritanism of the colonial days, which is held in the forefront of the media by the Religious Right.

That seems about right from what Ive seen. They seem to either very anti sex or over the top porno wise. I guess there are quite sexually normal Americans but maybe they are like us (or some of us lol) and dont normally discuss it. Dont tell anyone else but Ive actually done it with a couple of 'normal' American blokes in my time. But I wouldnt want to broadcast it. ooops!
