People flee their country everyday for a chance at living in the United States. But what is their inspiration to do so? What is it they think they will find when they reach the US shores? Where do they get the idea that America is the promised land? Surely they must know that hatred is waiting for them....?

Well, well...aren't we all just the best little boys and girls...loving our fellow man. I didn't mention the legal status of the immigrants...but what would your answers have been if I had included the word 'illegal'. Suddenly, all your warmth and compassion would dissipate. And your answers would have been filled with the fact that they are coming here to suck the system dry! Hypocrites!!!

And as for America being the best place in the world to visit...what do you base that upon? Have you all travelled so extensively that you KNOW the US to be the BEST in the world?

I am an immigrant (from Asia).

Most immigrants don't know anything about America except that there are jobs, carpeted floors, air conditioners and lots of trees and "no poor people."

In fact, it has nothing to do with inspiration. It is to have a better comfortable life. A life in the land where there are no mosquitoes, tons of money, peace, food, water, and a working "uncorrupt" system of government (for ex: good police).

As an immigrant, I haven't encountered "that much" of a hatred. But there are still people who I have been mocked by. But despite that, I think America has a "mysterious" promise, a lure of hope that drives immigrants here. Also, Americans are very friendly to immigrants (especially to the ones that take the plane).

I have lived in 5 countries and America is the most "mysterious" in a positive way. I sometimes wonder why I was not born as an American here...everything would be so different.

But as an immigrant, I don't think I will ever discover what America is.

First of all why do you say hatred is waiting for them? True, most immigrants aren't really welcomed. My grandparents went through a lot with the KKK and others back when they immigrated from Austria-Hungary in the early 1900's. But the reason they came is still the reason immigrants want to come today. It is the opportunity to live a decent, free and safe life and to become an American citizen. No matter what people like you say, America is still the best country in the world to live in. I am a liberal Democrat, a veteran of Viet Nam who happens to be the grateful recipient of being a grandson of people who had the courage to give up everything they had to come to America. Thank God they did. I am living the good life now because of their decision. It is the right wing conservative Republicans that hate the immigrants and as long as you stay away from them, this is a pretty great country.

The US is the most free of all the countries. In the US you have the best opportunity to make what you want from life possible. You go as far as your drive does. What they are looking for is a hopeful future and the chance at success. And they are not hated they just need to assimilate and they will be fine.

The US has loads of cheap, slave wage labor for their hearts content. After they have been fully exploited, they can then be arrested and tossed out on their breaking and entering ears. At least, that is how immigration seems to work today which is a shame.

Build a fence, arrest CEO's of companies that hire illegals, and deport the ones who are here to the back of the legal immigration line where they belong.

There is no such thing as a "law abiding illegal immigrant". ID and SS fraud is a crime the last time I checked.

"Surely they know there is hatred waiting for them"

You are the root of all that is evil.
I blame war, corruption, child abuse, theft, arson, larceny, forgery, rape, genocide and rush limbaugh on your mentality summed up in that one sentence.

For one thing - the USA has spent billions in the last 30 years on an international ad campaign to present ourselves as the land of liberty. Next television and movies are the NUMBER ONE export from this country. Presumably you are aware that hollywood has a tendency to present this country a certain way.

Please learn to love thy neighbor for everyone's sake.

The only ones that are hated are the ones who bypass the legal immigration procedures and sneak into the country and suck up public resources.

Immigrants that are willing to come here legally and become productive citizens, and meld into the culture are welcome.

A better life; and, oh, by the way, they DO find that better life here, contrary to the bleatings of the left-wing, Weak Sister propagandists.
