If you have a meter they may be assuming its because your paying a debt off on it. I couldnt get my electricity changed until after Id had my meter taken out. For some reason a new supplier doesnt seem to want to take on a meter user. If you have no debt, your current supplier should change you to a direct debit, then you can change suppliers.

I guess you might have to set aside a bit of time to get on the phone and try and explain all this to your gas company ( or to a new company if you want to change ). It might take a little while and a bit of perseverance but there shouldn't be any real reason why they won't let you change. If you've got no credit rating because you've never had any credit, then explain that to them - everybody has to start somewhere.
