My 8 month old recently started bobbing her head (she kind of looks like she's head banging at a rock concert). She doesn't get hurt and only does it for a few seconds. Is this normal? btw she can hold her head up very well, it's not like her neck is weak, she is doing it on purpose.

Most kids shake their head in the no movement because it is fun, not because they are saying no.

Yours bobs.

No biggie. Copy her I betcha she smiles at you because you are in on the "game"

Hi! I am so glad you asked this question! I am on the internet here searching for answers to this question also!

Interestingly enough my baby is 8 mos. old too. She just started this head bobbing thing. It is concerning to me because she bobs her head backwards and tilts forward and can do this a couple of times....My dh is thinking this is occuring during times when she is tired...I have noticed it more frequently after I have just fed her and I am standing her on my legs in front of me. I have also noticed this occur during play 1 time.

I have looked up some interesting things one being spasmus nutans....which is head bobbing and tilting but my child doesn't exhibit the "nystagmus" ( rapid eye movement). The other info I looked up was an Optic Pathway Tumor that exhibits head bobbing.

At any rate, this might just be something benign that is developmental. It might occur more frequently than what we are aware of.

I am going to continue to monitor it and bring it to my pediatricians attention at the 9 month exam.

I disagree with many of the statements saying that it is just her having fun.... it is very scary to watch. And it doesn't look normal.

If you want to email me please feel free. If I find out what it is I will let you know.

I don't think the first person knows what they are talking about. All my kids never bobbed their heads and they are fine. I think it is normal for kids to want to play. I think your daughter is just playing. If you are really worried about it ask her doctor.

It is very very good for her to lift up her head and it is great for her to bob it like that. She is developing her brain stem on the back of her neck and if you dont let her develop this it could make her autistic so you want to make sure she lifts up her head when laying on her belly and bob's it too.

All three of my kids did this. They did it when they were excited and especially when they were beginning to be mobile. It was like they were willing themselves into forward motion.:0)
I guess that is why they are not autistic,...lol

Then I wouldn't worry if she's controlling her own neck. I would worry if she was beating her head against something. As long as she isn't hurt I wouldn't worry.

LOL. My son did this too, as an infant. It's pretty cute. They outgrow it. No worries.
