It meant to get your attention as allot of people are looking down or their mind is on something else...Maybe a Duck? I think if you said duck you might not get a response as quickly as they would be looking for the thing that is coming their way. I think that most of the time it is too late they get hit with something and then DUCK.

"heads up" means to be alert to whats happening. Ducking may not be the best solution.

It means that you need to have your head up and be more alert with your surrounding's. So you can have a better change to duck when you need to.

Its a phrase that should alert someone to pay attention to an impending event. However, it has historically the meaning has become confused. Someone who was said to been asked to show 'heads up' were consummed with what they were doing and were keeping there noses to the grindstone. The meaning of this phraese has shifted of this pharse from raising ones head to lowering it! Hope this helps

When somebody says "heads up"
I don't, automatically duck ---
( unless you are very timid, you don't )
you sit up and see
what it is, you have been drawn attention to
Then when it hits you ! you will be aware of what it is !!!!
OUCH !
meanwhile, Mr Smart ( 'heads up') walks away laughing ....
There is a moral in here somewhere ,
Blessed ,if i know what it is ~~~~~~~
