My boyfriend and I want to rent an apartment together, but the company we want to rent from says because we are students and in a college borough, we can't unless we're married. Is this for real or what? We're BOTH over 21 and have jobs. We are not full time students. Is this illegal?

It definitely sounds highly illegal to me. I would guess the company is probably checking some sort of insurance data, and it is telling them two single college students are X times more likely to skip out on the rent then blah blah if at least one couple is married. I would check your state landlord tenant act. It covers all such matters....Mary.

Don't go through the off-campus housing, go through private landlords or even a real estate agency. If the apartments are affiliated with the school, then yes you probably would have to be married. Check the Sunday newspaper or craigslist or something.

No, that is discrimination. I live in PA, so I advise that you tell your landlord that you will contact the Attorney General for illegal or "selective renting", based on race, religion and even marital status.

If tax dollars are involved, they can pretty much set the rules to thier liking. Find somewhere independent of the funding if you wish to live in peace.

No, I think the landlord can set some rules... not sure if that one could be considered discriminitory - Title VII of the civil rights act ?
