Just use 3 strings, the D(4th), G(3rd) and B(2nd).

1) If you play them as open string you have a G chord with the 5th as the lowest voice(2nd inversion).

2) Play the fourth string with you 3rd finger at the fifth fret,
your third string with your 2nd finger at the fourth fret,
and your 2nd string with your 1st finger at the third fret.
This is a G chord in root position(G in the lowest voice).

3) Play the fourth string with you 3rd finger at the ninth fret,
your third string with your 1st finger at the seventh fret,
and your 2nd string with your 2nd finger at the eight fret.
This is a G chord in 1st inversion(B in the lowest voice).

4) Play a first figer bar over the same 3 strings at the twelfth fret.
This is a G chord in 2st inversion(D in the lowest voice), an octave higher than the first.

You can do a LOT with just these voicings. They don't sound as lush as some voicings that have doubled voices, but these are a great to arpeggiate and change up and down. Also use the fingers on the right hand to play all three notes together. Strumming all three with a pick works too, just remember to mute the other strings so they don't sound. This takes practice. Good luck.

1, 2 and 3 fingers. Same fingers you would use for C.
