Take an Ibubrofen before if it makes you uncomfortable. Take deep breaths while the procedure is underway!

A pap smear should not cause pain. The most important thing is to relax and not tighten up your muscles as this will make the procedure more difficult. At the clinic I work at, I have seen one dose of Valium prescribed to patients who were unable to successfully complete their pap smear due to nerves. Although I would not recommend taking anyones medication without consulting your doctor.

A pap smear is not supposed to hurt to the point where you need medication to calm you. it can be a little bit uncomfortable but you are not supposed to be in a lot of pain. I would suggest talking your doctor about it because he/she could have more insight about it plus it could be that the size specula they are using on you is too big. That happened to me and they switched to a smaller one and I now have my pap smears with no problems at all. It is important to relax too.

If your doctor is doing the procedure correctly and using lubrication and warm instruments, there should be no pain. You do need to relax though, so a tranq might help
