Depends on what fish you're talking about. Some males, like guppies and tetras, will eat their fry if they can. Others, like many cichlids, are excellent parents and a vital part of protecting the fry. Others yet, such as bettas and gouramis, are vigilant parents where the eggs are involved, but should be removed once they hatch.
All in all, if you are prepared to feed the fry frequently and keep their water clean, you may remove the male.
