A collection of related records which are made up of data fields.
A good example is a table of address records where each address is made up of data fields like name, addressLine1 addressLine2, City,State,Zip ,Phone ect...
The information is the database....the information can be stored in a text file, excell spread sheet or a database program like Access or SQLserver.
The programs make it easier to manage the information, where a program like Access let you easily find a record , add, edit and sort the information. While a text file database has no real capability other than storage and appending additional records.

The term or expression database originated within the computer industry. Although its meaning has been broadened by popular use, even to include non-electronic databases, this article takes a more technical perspective towards the topic. A possible definition is that a database is a collection of records or information which is stored in a computer in a systematic (i.e. structured) way, so that a computer program can consult it to answer queries. The records retrieved in answer to queries become information that can be used to make decisions. The computer program used to manage and query a database is known as a database management system (DBMS). The properties and design of database systems are included in the study of information science.

---------------------------- detailed answer -------------------------------::
A database consists of different data that shows relationship to one another.
------------------- what makes database important? -----------------::
Database is very important because it is where data are stored and are retrieved by the user.
If there are no database existing, there will be no massively-multiplayer online role playing games like Ragnarok. If there are no database, MS Word, MS Excel, Powerpoint and other software will lose its purpose as software. If there are no database, then computers would not have been invented.
