The Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino is a good deal. It's right in the center of the strip and next to Cesear's and the Bellagio and other big resorts. Bally's is a little more but nicer and right in the same area. I would call Imperial Palace directly b/c my friends have gotten cheaper rates by calling than the lowest advertised rates on the internet. Just be prepared for some hot weather when you go too.

Well, you picked the best time financially to visit Las Vegas, climatically maybe not.... , however the closer you are to Labor Day your bargain possibilities dry up. Excuse the pun. August is the absolute hottest time of the year, meaning no big conventions going on, meaning you have a bargain chip. I agree with the posters above Re: Imperial Palace and the all inclusive vacations through USAirways.
I might recommend a new kid on the block; Kayak.com. Instead of trying to sell you seats and rooms like Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz and Priceline, this site scans parctically every airline, hotel, rental car agency AND other sites to give you the most possible information. You will be amazed at the price spread. I just did a quick search on Kayak from RDU to LAS on the 30th coming back on the 2nd and got 490 flights, most around the $280 to $320 per person RT. I didn't know there were that many flights in/out of Raleigh.
My recommendation; take the earliest flight out you can and take the latest flight back, even if it is a "red-eye". That way you maximize your time in Vegas. There are a lot of East bound flights leaving McCarren 10pm, 11pm and even after midnight. That would but you back on the Right Coast early morning, depending on the airline.
If you are smokers or can tolerate staying in rooms that have been smoked in, The Imperial Palace and Circus Circus are great bargains Mid Strip. In Vegas its location first and a close second in conventions that drive hotel prices. You have hot non- convention August going for you, an upcoming holiday weekend going against you. You could really get a bargain the week prior, i.e. come out Tuesday the 28th and go back the night of the 31st.
If you really want to save some money, AND smoke, try Terribles (http://www.terribleherbst.com/casinos/lasvegas/). I know, strange name for a casino. I've stayed there several times during the NAB (Nat'l Assoc. of Broadcasters) convention during which you can't buy a hotel room in Vegas. It's on Paradise & Flamingo not far from the Monorail which will take you to North Strip (Stratosphere Tower) and South Strip (MGM Grand/NY NY). I remember paying less that $50 for a room. Now it;s not the Venetian or Bellagio but....
Another recommendation; don't rent a car there. You don't really need it and it becomes a hassle. Be sure you take a trip to the Hoover Dam / Lake Mead area. Worth it in every way!
Good luck and Happy Anniversary

Las Vegas is great! Good choice. I would recommend using one of the package vacation websites like Orbitz, Priceline, Travelocity or Hotwire. They have some really good deals. But do look at the some of the hotel reviews people give, sometimes they put you in a certain part of the hotel, depending on which one, that is less than desirable, I know Circus Circus is one where if they put you in the "motor lodge" back part, its cheaper, but it is not good. The Orleans is a very reasonably priced hotel that is nice, it is a little off the strip , if you dont mind that. I have stayed there. But you should be able to find some great deals on any of those websites, You can take cabs around the city, but if you want to save money, the bus is much much cheaper. There are many cool things to do there other than gambling. There is a wax museum , Madame Toussade's ,at the Venitian that is really neat, downtown is fun - there is a free light show every night on Fremont Street and downtown has more of an old time Vegas feel, Circ du Soleil has many different shows at the various hotels which are astounding(although they would require a little bit of splurging, the tickets are not cheap), and there is tons of great shopping. Restraunts too, but I dont think its always true that the food is cheap in Vegas. It depends on where you go. There are many buffets, good and bad, ask around, I remember there being a good breakfast one at the Main Street Station downtown. I was there in Nov.2004. If you gamble, sometimes your hotel can give you comp cards to help with gambling. I hope any of this helps. Have fun!

Happy Anniversary in advance...
try vegas.com. High end hotels are BELLAGIO, MGM, CAESARS PALACE.. for first timers like you, PARIS is good. its right in the middle of the strip. DONT stay at the Fremont or Circus2, or Sahara or Stratosphere cause they are way down south of the strip. Dont stay at the RIO , Palms too cause you have to walk across the freeway to get to the strip. dont stay away from the strip, cause thats where the happenings are. renting a car will be an additional expense. You can visit these hotel by walking or bus or cab.
If thats the only DATE you can leave, expect traffic and expensive/fully booked hotels. So i suggest you book early.
When you see the rates on vegas.com, i suggest you call the hotel too and their website to compare the prices.
as for what to do....hmmmm there are a lot of free shows you can catch. vegas.com too....make a "list" so you know which to do first. they have schedules too. so you have to make a note.
then you can probably splurge on a show or 2. try any of the cirque de soleil shows. you can get it online at full price or you can go the the FASHION SHOW MALL or near MGM, there is a store there called 1/2 off show tickets today. But you have to be there 12NN that day to get the show for that night. But not all shows. You'll be lucky if the show you wanted have tickets at 1/2 off.

Stay @ Belligo,Caesar, Wynn,Venetian, Paris , all in the middle of the Strip. Want south end stay Mandalay Bay, Four Seasons, north end Stratosphere or Sahara. First class is always a $1 more, but the enjoyment is always worth the memories. Do NOT stay downtown--you have not been there before and will not get what you want or expect. You want to come back,-- then consider a downtown place. Unless your in the "whale" category there really are no deals there. Want food, buffets all over the place with sundry prices and qualities. restaurants all over and you can choose to what you want to pay--same as at home. Going to eat buffet go to a place like listed casino as they turn there buffets over quickly. Less likely to get food poisoning. It will be hot at that time ,outside, probably 110 degrees day time 90 at night; yet bring a sweater as the casinos are kept cold. Do Not rent a car. Walking preferred method of transportation on the strip, You want to go to Hoover Dam, go next trip; as highway under construction to and through the dam area. Late evenings use a cab.

www.vegas.com
It's thru US Airways and pretty much the best package deal I've seen yet. (Average of $550 out of RDU for air and hotel at the nicer ones on the Strip - which is REALLY good!!)

You can stay downtown on Fremont Street, cheaper than on the strip.....Also food is less expensive, and you can walk easily from Casino to casino...we like it downtown....Eat at The golden gate...Prime Rib Dinner starts at noon $5.95...Then Taxi or Bus to the strip...4 of us shared a taxi one way back to town $20.00, but it is way faster than the Bus..If you can fly in on Wednesday, it will probably be cheaper.....You'll have a great time, and lots of memories!

god, whatever you do, do NOT stay at imperial palace. that place is a dump. if you're going to come to vegas stay at one of the newer hotels. it's not worth coming if you don't. go ahead and get a good hotel like mandalay bay or paris. you don't need to stay at someplace like the bellagio or wynn, but please stay at one of the newer places. the trick to vegas is not getting screwed on your meals. that's where they stick it to you. go ahead and go a few blocks off the strip for dinner at least one night and you save $!

Prices actually tend to increase the closer you are to the date. I know this is true with Air Travel. So I cannot actually say that it's true for hotels.
