Im a divorced mom and in my case he didnt want to be bothered with them, if I did not want him back. He has not seen the kids in a 2 years other then the month he wanted to get back together........... I was weak and believed that he had changed, and was off the drugs.
He did nothing with them just saw them when he was with me..... doesnt pay support , or any bills, but at the end of the month I came to my senses that he would never change, kicked him out and found out baby # 3 was on the way....
I can support them alone I dont need him, so its all good. Some fathers would take better care of the children then the mother does, but dont get the chance.

That's a very good question. I have my own theory on that. I will share it with you. I personally feel that women get better treatment from the law. They want all the same rights as a man but they complain when they do. Like title 9 is a slap in the face to men and so is the draft. If women want the same rights as a man they should be put on the draft too but anyways... the court system I think is sexist. For an example; my brothers ex gave birth to his son but she broke up with him before the child was born. He wanted to be the father, she didn't. The hospital wouldn't even let us go and visit the baby cuz the mother put no father on the birth certificate. But then..about 2 months later she sued him for child support....and WON! That is ridiculous. So he has to pay child support for a child he has never seen and never will. And the birth certificate stills says no father. So, it just goes to show that the court system is sexist.

Generally, because in the majority of cases, they do not ask for custody. Statistically, in the majority of the cases where both parties want custody, the children end up going to the father. The whole "men-get-screwed-in-divorce-proceedings" story is largely a myth perpetuated by men who didn't get everything they wanted on a silver platter.

What stmichael said . . .
Most fathers don't want custody. Those who do (not just who say they do) and are willing to fight to the death, do just as well or even better than the mothers. When I say "to the death," I mean it. There is nothing bloodier or more expensive than an all out custody battle when both sides are willing to go to the mat.
