Would a top 25 school have more difficult coursework than say a tier 3 or 4 school? Or is it just that you are competing with more intellegent students. Thanks.

It's primarily your competition, since nearly all law schools are graded on a curve.

The better ones do have more famous professors, but really, you just learn the basic subject matter. Not too much translates out to the real world in detail. You just get a foundation in law school.

That's why employers and lawyers make such a big deal about the rankings. Law school really doesn't teach you much. So, what school you went to gives them a rough idea of how intelligent you might be.

I have some really famous profs at my top 25 school, but my school is really laid back, so I don't think it is as intense as some of the other schools that I have heard about. We do have a more intensive legal writing program and higher expectations for clinics, etc, than other schools do though. What it does hurt you on is the curve because you are ranked in relation to everyone else, but then again, a 3.0 at a top 25 school means a lot more to employers than a 3.5 at a tier 3/4 school.

Basically, though, everyone learns the same thing. We all study Pierson v Post, Eire, International Shoe, Marbury v Madison, etc. It really matters for your job prospects which school you go to.

It is a little bit of both. Look at the percentage of students at top schools who pass the Bar exam on the first try compared to the students from third and fourth tier schools. The quality of student is one reason -- but the fact that you have better professors and are at a better school is part of it too.
