I have the most adorable English Bulldog pup in the world. She is perfect in every way except one - I just noticed an outrageously long whisker. I thought it was a strand of my hair hanging out of her mouth, put pulled a little and it was ATTACHED! Now for my question... and I hope this doesn't sound ridiculous. Can I trim it? It looks like it is almost 5 inches long and could start dragging the floor. Thanks for any insight!

I would post a picture for all to enjoy, but I have no idea how to do that in this forum. Sorry.

I got the 360 account! I will play with it, as this picture isn't the one that I wanted to use - it is too far away. Thanks so much for that - ask a question about a dog and get much more than that! Cool.

As a whisker is no more than an elongated, specialized hair itself, it can be timmed, just don't cut it back too far, and DO NOT try and pluck it out! ! !
And NO, your question is NOT DUMB! A DUMB question is one that doesn't get asked!

You'll be alright if you trim it. I wouldn't recommend shaving it off but I suggest that you leave maybe an inch or so. Dogs use their whiskers sort of like a cat.
Not only do whiskers help them see in the dark- but they can sense distance, speed, and direction from them. Some breeds of dogs also use their whiskers to trap smells in the follicle bedding.

Yes, you can shave or trim her whiskers. They dont really serve much of a purpose on dogs. Some of the hunting breeds are thought to use their whiskers for smelling purposes, but bulldogs arent much for hunting. I shave my dogs whiskers off when they start to look too long, the only problem is that when they start to grow in, they have sharp ends that poke you when you go to kiss her.

If its just one whisker, I dont think trimming it would hurt a thing. I dont have any dogs right now, but I have three cats and they do use their whiskers to sense things , but they have a lot of them, so one shouldn't make a difference and every once in a while, they even shed them. Go for it, just be careful with the scissors.

You can trim them. They're only purpose is for the dog to tell if their body can squeez thru an opening. Don't trim a cat's whiskers tho... There was an old lady on my street when I was a kid and she used to trim her cat's whiskers. Her cats would always get stuck in bushes.

Bulldog Health .. For exhibition, his whiskers should be clipped. Always provide your bulldog with clean fresh water and a correct and nutritious diet. ...

If the whisker is IN your dogs mouth pull it. Better yet take the dog to a Dr. and get his advice.
