visit www.gtp.gr.
Do not worry, if you do not have a car to take on the ferry, but just need passenger ticket , you can find one even the same day of your trip (except august, that is crowded). Also, notice that we have ferries and high speed ships. The latest are faster but a little more expensive.

All are connected to Athens port (Piraeus) by ferry. However, the nicest among the closest are: Andros, Syros, Sifnos, Paros. Those are about 2-3 hours by high-speed ferry. Careful, because there are slower ferries too operating the same routes. Also Aegina and Hydra are very close to Athens, but they are very good for a day trip from Athens, not for a long vacation there.

No matter what the schedule says the trip may be cancelled at any time for reason of heavy seas. So you just wait until the next scheduled departure or even the one after that if the seas are still too rough.

Oh and another thing dont believe what they tell you the Greeks dont know themselves what is going on.During the summer time there are so many delays it unbelievable due to the locals going on their summer holidays and also due to the overflow of foreignors visiting the islands. I know cause I live in Greece.
Goodluck and happy holiday.
