When the car is driving it is noisy like metal rubbing together, and i have to select first gear maybe 4 times before it actually selects.

Yes, the thow out bearing is on the input shaft of the transmission and pulls the clutch away from the flywheel during shifts.
If it goes bad you get all kinds of noise and shift issues.
