I will be spending three weeks in Chennai next month (5th thru the 23rd). What is there to see and do?

I am giving you some of the sites omitted by others.
There is a snake park (where extraction of venom is demonstrated once in the forenoon.Also a deer park,both within the city.
On the road to Mahabalipuram(55 Kms south on East Coast Road) there are many beach resorts.There is a boat house and crocodile park on the way
There is Pulicat lake 20 Kms North
During April-May it will be hot(35 to 40 degree C).
Have a nice time when you do come.

There are some great things to do in Chennai - more so if you are happy to travel around the outskirts. You can go to Marina beach, Valuvarkottam (whihc is very cool), and there are some fantastic temples and museums you can go to. The best thing to do is to book some tours, which are very reasonably priced. There are great markets at T Nagar (just jump in an auto and ask them to take you to Residency TOWERS hotel, they are right next the hotel - and while you are there you can have a beer at the Bike and Barrel Bar!!)
You can also head to Pondicherry, which is a longer bus trip south, but is beautiful, and go to the Dakshin chitra artists colony.

If you like to reinvent History, them Madras (Chennai) is the center of British History in India. Visit Fort St.George, Museum, Art Gallery. Then roam about in old George Town or Black Town, where every street is historical. Then If you are interested in Temples please visit Mylapore or Triplicane. Visit the old churches in Santhome. Little Hills or St. Thomas Mount. Or visit the Mosques at Thousand Lights or in Mount Road.Of course there is the beautiful Marina beach which is a must. Theosophical Society's H.Q. at Adar has old buildings and the famous banyan tree. Make use of your stay in Chennai to the best and enjoy visiting all these places and time permits take a trip to Mahabalipuram.

Hi,
yu really hav plenty of time to spend in chennai... i'm sure yu'll hav lots of fun... In the city yu've to go to Spencer plaza(mount road), Sathyam cinemas(near by spencer), t.nagar (for shopping)...
World's second longest beach - marina beach (if yu r with yur loved one hold his hand & go for a walk from anna memorial to light house in the sea shore).... Elliots beach which is in besant nagar is a peaceful beach with a church nearby.. near that beach one hindu temple is there(ashta lakshmi temple). that's really a nice temple to enjoy the beach as well the hindu culture...
then go for a drive to ECR(East Coast Road).... that road is ful of good beach resorts, maayajal(cineplex)...
There r lots of hindu temples in the city....
Vadapalani- lord murugan temple
Mylapore- kapaliswar temple
Nanganallur- hanuman temple(there yu could see 30ft hanuman statue)
these r all imporatant temples, still there r plenty of temples..
Then please visit Mamallapuram... yu'll be zapped after seeing that stone statues there....
Lastly to have a drink to hang out yu have lot's of nice pubs..my fav is flame in le royal meridian(Guindy)...

Y go by site seeing bus, golden beach, kanzivaram sarees, a lot of shiva & vishnu temples
