I just came from the pediatrician and she seemed surprised to hear that my 4 1/2 month old boy was not rolling over or laughing. Should I be worried?

Average age for rolling over is 5 1/2 months (anywhere from 5 to 7 months is normal). Your baby is a little too young for that, so don't worry. Regarding laughing - he may just be a serious baby, that's all. Try playing peek-a-boo or pat-a-cake with him and see if it gets you a smile or two, and if it does, then don't worry! If it doesn't, then you may want to talk about it with the doc, but again, every baby is different and has his/her own time frames for normal development!

Please do not let this worry you. My son did not begin rolling until 5 months and he will laugh when something is funny...or passes some bad gas. As long as he has other developmental milestones like holding up his own head and recognizing familiar faces I would not be too concerned. Sometimes I think other mothers can make their babies development seem like a race, "your son isn't rolling over yet, my son's been rolling over for months now" The sooner I learned to stop paying attention to what he was not doing and just patient the better off I was. I would stay aware of his development and you can even show her how to roll by moving her back and fourth on the bed... but don't worry...once she gets started you can't stop her! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

First of all I think you might need to interview a few new doctors. My twins were very premature and were laughing at 5 mos but have not rolled over at 7 mos and my Dr suggested a physical therapist a couple months ago.
I wouldn't worry about it too much every baby is different but your Dr should have given you options instead of just expressing concerns.
Think of it this way you are your babies only advocate so ask, ask, ask until you feel confident in the doctors response.

My son didn't roll over till he was about 6 months old. He didn't really like tummy time, so he did the back to front roll first. All babies are different...your DR should no wthat...no worries...if your son isn't doing these things by 6 or 6-1/2 months then I'd start to worry.

Isn't that the greatest thing ever!! Congrats on finally getting to experience it! But no i don't think its too late. Every kid is different, they all walk a different times, talk at different times, so why would they all laugh at different times? My son was around 2 months when I first heard him laugh. But i have know others with "serious" babies that didn't laugh until 5 months!!

Have you been giving the baby tummy time, you are supposed to several times a day and for atleast 5 minutes each time. So the rolling is soemtimes relative to what you are doing. So what he's not rolling over, just work on it now by putting him on tummy time and see if there are any results in a week or so.
About the laughing, maybe he is not bursting out in laughter but is he smiled and just chuckling a tiny bit? Maybe you are not funny, do silly stuff and see if you get a response.

Did she offer any reason as to why this might be? Or try to ease any worry you might have about this?

All babies are different, and develop at different rates. I might be a little bit concerned; but not too much.

Make another appointment with the pediatrician to talk about it. I think it kind of s*cks that she would react that way, and not follow up with an explanation....

i wouldnt be worried, my daughter is 6 months and the doctor was surprised that she has started to roll over. laughing however, she should be doing, but i wouldnt be to concerned yet. just give her a little more time and play with her on the floor more and she will want to explore whats around and eventually start to roll.

My advice is check what he should be doing. People always act suprised. I have a daughter who has CP which is mild and she could not do those things either. I looked into what she could do verse what she should be and made a choice. She was 4 months old when I had her evaluated and she still recieves services. I guess what I am trying to say is search in your gut and see what you think. If you feel he is behind then look into early intervention. If you want to wait and see where he is at 6 months. Look in your heart!

i wouldn't be to concerned some babies don't get going for a while and some do. maybe you can start trying to make your baby laugh, toss him in the air or swing down slightly. some people out there aren't ticklish. you can start putting your baby on his stomach for a while at a time and that might help the process to rolling over.
