I think that you have to let yourself find you. You can't look for yourself. Its something that's involuntary not voluntary..you have to let it happen naturally. It also has something to do with you, your conscience, the actions of your conscience, and the way you interact with others around you. Writing a diary, or traveling gives you time to be with yourself but doesnt help you find yourself. When you realize youve changed, which comes overtime, youll look back and see that you think a lot differently about things at the present then when you were looking for yourself. But in the meantime just follow your heart and let time and experiences mold you.

Learn, through philosophy and religion, to have a concept about self. Then constantly ask and answer your own questions.
For example, you conceive that you have thoughts and they lead you to actions. So what thoughts will you follow and what will you reject.
You think about love of your family, usually these thoughts are good. But still what is good, how to reach good results, what virtues are necessary to love them perfectly? The answering to these questions gives you some wisdom. The observation of the results gives you some more wisdom. The practice with new experiences increases your wisdom.
So, with time practicing the observation of your thoughts, the results of your actions, your wisdom in asking and answering your own questions will enable you to answer the question as who you are.
Each individual is finally his controlled or uncontrolled thoughts.

Take silly quizes (there are tons to be found on internet).
The answer to "What superhero are you?" might not tell you much but the questions might get you thinking about yourself. And it's a lot more amusing then spending hours reading dull philosophical texts, meditating and whatnot.

It takes time, research on many levels, education, actually living and trying different things, delving into your true feelings, becoming responsible, maturity, and growth, to find yourself.
Don't limit yourself to one way of life, in any area, find out what you truly like.
Good Luck
