I went to a jewelry store in the mall and paid to have them done with a gun.

Go to a piercing parlor and have it done. Using piercing guns isn't all that good. They can't properly be cleaned, they damage the tissue MUCH more than a hollow needle will. The gun will also take longer to heal and often leads to infections. I have had so many problems with the piercings I had done at the mall. I recommend a piercing parlor. On the plus side of the parlor, you can have whatever jewelry put in that you want right away and even whatever gauge you want.

And for those of us who haven't seen Full House in ten years.....
Get your ears pierced at a body piercing place (most tattoo studios offer body piercing as well). Doing it yourself you risk them being uneven or not straight and you risk infection. Getting them done at the mall is common, but not good. There is no way to sterilize a piercing gun and that poses a health risk.
Read these, hopefully they will shed some light on the subject:

Rub an ice cube on your earlobe to numb your ear. Then get a needle and heat it up with a lighter. Then punch the needle through the ear quick while the ear is still numb. Before doing this, make sure that you sterilize the needle first. Take care of your ear and clean it daily.

Do not use a thumb tack because I had a friend pierce my ear with one and it got infected. It was the top part where they say if you hit a nerve you can get paralyzed and my ear started bleeding really bad and it got a big bump filled with gross stuff and the nurse cut it with a razor blade and it hurt really bad!

with a thumb tac and a lot of towels on the lower part of your lobe it's not rocket scinece get a tack and a piece of cork or somthing soild that the needle will go through and place behind the ear so when you push the tac in it goes all the way through you dont want to only go half way though thats for sure but do it hard and quick or you can spend the $20 and go to the mall with a fake permission slip

I HAVE 5 HOLES IN EACH EAR AND I PIERCED THEM ALL MYSELF AND I PIERCED MY FRIENDS EARS ALSO. WHAT I DO IS I NUMB THE SKIN WITH ICE, BURN THE STUD WITH A LIGHTER TO KILL THE GERMS FROM THE EARRING AND THEN JUST PUSH THE STUD THROUGH THE EAR. IT DOESNT HURT THAT MUCH. CLEAN 2X A DAY WITH PEROXIDE FOR 3 MONTHS AND THEY WILL TURN OUT FINE.

I've never done my own piercings. I do know you can get a at home piercing kit from Sally's beauty supply stores.

piercing your ears by yourself is dangerous. instead, go to a place at the mall where you can get it done for free.
