A colonoscopy is not painful. The preparation is typically reported to be the most unpleasant part. The day following the procedure you will be severly limited as to foods that you can eat and you have to drink a fluid that makes you have countless bowl movements. It helps to cleanse the bowels so that the scope can get good images of the lining of the colon. Some people report bm's every hour the day before.

The procedure itself is very fast (only a few minutes) and you will be under consious sedation so you won't feel anything or remember it. When you wake up, your colon will be full of gas. You will have a lot of flatus and the staff will not let you leave until you push the gas out. So, ask your family to leave the recovery room and start letting 'er rip!!!

You'll probably be drowsy the rest of the day, but thats the extent of it. Back to normal the following day.

Good luck to you and congratulations on taking steps towards preventive medicine! Colonoscopies save lives!

ok, i dont know what the person is talking about being put to sleep and not eating and all that. maybe that was awhile ago. colpo is pretty simple. you lay on the same thing that you do for an exam, put your feet in the same stirrups. they put in the same speculum as in a pap. they shine a light on the area and hold a microscope up to it. they will brush a liquid on your cervix which may sting a little but but is not really painful. then they just examine it. if they see something abnormal they may take a biopsy at that time, meaning slice off a teeny tiny piece of tissue from inside. that may cause a quick tinge of pain in your belly, like a cramp. it goes away quickly. you may spot some brown stuff for the next few days, which will just be the liquid that they put on you coming out.

it may be helpful to take a pain med (tylenol, advil) an hour before going in , ive heard that may help. i never found it to be too bad though, ive had it twice. i must say that the first time, after it was done and i got dressed and stood up, i felt a little dizzy and nauseaous, but i think that was just my nerves. you may feel a little crampy that day but dont be scared of any horrible pain or anything.

I had one done a couple of weeks ago for suspected HPV. It was a very similar procedure to having a pap, except that they use a microscope to look inside you and take a biopsy if needed. I find paps particularly painful and I get a bit of cramping and spotting. The colposcopy was a little worse than that because they took some cultures. I didn't need to have a biopsy taken, so I don't know how that would have been. Sometime doctors will give you a sedative before you get it done. Mine didn't and I was very nervous.

Good luck to you and try not to worry.

BTW. We are talking about a colposcopy here, not a colonoscopy.

I had two colposcopys done. They were not painful. It was like getting a pap smear just maybe a little cramping. My doctor told me to take some pain reliever medicine just before I came in. And I did not feel nothing. Here is a site with some information: http://womenshealth.about.com/cs/cevicalconditions/a/colposcopy.htm I hope everything is ok.

Where I had it done they put you out completely and you just go to sleep and then just wake up and its over. Nothing to it. The worst part was the not eating for a day before.

It's not so much painful as embarrassing. If you are modest, you will feel embarrassed. It's not pain, more like pressure, and well worth it to save your life. Good luck.
