well, I don't know when it started, but HSBC stands for "Hong Kong Shanghai Bank", so probably Hong Kong or Shanghai. Have you been to their website and searched under corporate information?

IN NY IT WAS CALLED MARINE MIDLAND BANK, THEN THE MERGE...HSBC BOUGHT BY A HONG KONG CO. (COULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO) GOOD LUCK!
