It depends on where you go. Let's talk about the places where soccer is most popular, so Italy, Brazil, England, etc.
Soccer, at the core, is a game and a business.
But behind that, soccer is a clash of ideals, city against city, soccer is a phylosophy, a way of life, almost a religion for how much time and effort it's fans put into it. A soccer match can become a matter of honor and national pride, as well as a source of shame when fanatism goes too far and claims one or more lives.
No sport is worth dying for, but for soccer, you might not feel TOO convinced when you say it.
