Something that draws you in. Whether it be a relatable story or character, an interesting topic, an amazing writing style, etc etc. Just something that makes you want more. :)

Personally, I think it's a great story that makes a novel a great read. Take Stephen King, for example: He is widely criticized in literary circles as being the equivalent of a Big Mac and fries for the reading masses, but he writes GREAT STORIES!!! Who cares about prose or themes that are socio-politically relevent? If they help make the story better they're fine, but it's the story itself that's important.

Any novel that has an original, relatable character with a unique point-of-view. It should be able to capture and hold my attention. I'm really not into cliche characters and romance or mystery stories.

That it convincingly tells a story. It should make the reader feel as though they are right there. It has to create in the reader a sense of empathy...why should I care about the character. And the author should put their own unique stamp or style on the story to distinguish them self.

Something that your audience can relate to. Something they would like to become, a period of time they wish they could have been in. It Current events with a twist work well too. Anything that is well thought out and captures your attention and your imagination is a good read.

Characters - as long as the characters are engaging, I want to read more. I'll want to know everything about them and their world, be it a fantasy, sci-fi, realistic, romance, mystery, "serious" lit, whatever. So long as I'm interested in the character, I will read their story.

Something that really comes from your heart. It's like a song. It always sounds better if it comes from the heart.
