I was recently in a mall and was observing the younger people (teens). It was obvious that most of them associated with members of their own race...black with black, white with white, hispanic with hispanic...and so on. Maybe in a work enviroment, adults are forced to get along with other races to accomplish a job, but what about teens? If the schools don't have forced integration, then isn't it completely voluntary for young people to develop friendships with those of other races. So, why don't they?

I'm not really sure Im in highschool right now and you always notice when you start a new class when no one knows anyone else the blacks sit with blacks, asians with asians and whites with whites. I think it probably has something to do with comfort. Since they don't know anyone people want to sit by someone that has something in common with them they can tell.
Why they still group? Im not sure maybe people just arnt willing to take the risk. Id feel like an outsider if I went up and talked to a big gang of blacks or asians. I think people just want to feel omfortable in school since theres so many other hard things to deal with at the time.

That's awfully true...a lot of it has to with their parents and what views their parents instill in them. When I was in school about 8 years ago, the first high school I went to, I had friends of all races...mostly b/c we grew up together...when I went to my second one, racism was everywhere. I couldn't go over my white friends houses because their parents didn't like black people. I was shocked and saddened because my other friends back at my first school never acted that way. But I guess it has a lot to do with the area you are in. Bowie is infested with racism and one day I hope it ends.

Well, I really don't know. When I was in high school, one of my best friends was a black girl named Keisha. No one "forced" me to be her friend, and to be honest, after about a month I forgot what color her skin was. It just doesn't matter all that much when you are a true friend of someone.
Later, in college, I had a black roommate named Melanie. I loved her as if she was my sister. I was lucky, my parents never put the poison of racism into my mind when I was growing up.

forcing doesn't work. ppl hang with who they want. i know that i am mixed and have a number for friend who are mixed like me because we never really fit in with the white or the black kids. I was never white enough for the white kids or black enough for the black kids.
