I adore both but I'd have to say Gone With the Wind. While the Wizard of Oz is also an instant classic GWTW won 10 Academy awards, nominated for 13,the highest grossing movie at the box office in history and Gable's "Frankly My Dear..." was rated #1 movie quote by the American Film Institution. The Wizard of Oz is a perfect movie to watch with the kids but GWTW is a sweeping, epic romance. Good question.

oops, my mistake -- listed a movie not made then.

Personally, my favorite movie made that year is
Rules of the Game, by Jean Renoir.

I also like Wuthering Heights, Stagecoach, Ninotochka, Young Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and Destry Rides Again better than either of those two.

But of the two, would depend entirely on my mood -- sometimes one, sometimes the other -- maybe Wizard of OZ is my choice today. GWTW is a great romantic epic, but WoO is unique, really, in being a mix of a kids fantasy and musical with great performers giving iconic performances. There isn't enough of Bert Lahr available in the movies.

I wouldn't say either was my favorite as 1939 was a pretty good year for movies, but of the two I would pick Oz.
