why do we still embalm people . i know in the past this helped keep the body from smelling and that ice was used to do this.
then someone came up with embalming but now we have dry ice and i am sure a system could be used to chill the body with that . so why do we still polute the earth with this embalming practice

i can tell you that this embalming is very damaging to the earth . people living near cemetaries who are on well water most often can not drink the water.
my father was a minister and in toronto in the large cemetaries once a hole was dug the coffin was being put into a layer of fuid from all the embalming . i am very positve of my facts.

That depends on what other things you might like the Earth to be contaminated with if we did away with embalming, such as AIDS, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis, Cancer and I could go on and on. Those diseases continue to live on after death, and embalming kills those diseases, so without embalming they would all be put in the Earth. Embalming is meant to disinfect (most importantly), preserve and restore to a life-like state for funerary puposes.

Hi Bill,
Let me enlighten you a tad. First of all my mom died almost one year ago. We had her embalmed then she was placed in a coffin, which was then placed in a concrete encased steel vault. I really don't think that anyone has to worry about the earth being polluted because of the type of preservation we chose for my mother. So, you can rest easy knowing that at least one dead person's family took care to be "environmentally" correct in the disposal of our embalmed loved ones remains. :-)

i imagine the embalming is to keep the stench down for the 'viewing of the body' ewww! this can be an effective question besides the undeniable fact that. also why do they placed them in caskets that do not become worse (or very slowly) basically to debris up the earth? i prefer to be creamated. i trust undesirable sufficient for 'cluttering' up the earth with my living body! lol
