My betta, Bob died 4 days ago. I'm not even quite sure why Bob died...I only had him for a year and not even two months. The day before he died, he was being his usual self...getting excited when I come and feed him, swimming about his tank. Then, the next day, I noticed he was on the bottom of his tank, but I didn't really notice that he was DEAD. I thought he was down there digging up his rocks like he normally does.
When I got back from school, I checked on him, and he was in the same place as he was in the morning...and realized that he was dead. His head was half off his body, and his normal purplish blue body has faded a few shades.
Does anyone have any idea what may have happened to Bob? Did he get intoxicated? I mean, I feed him everyday the right amout (one flake) and I change his water every week, and clean out his entire bowl when it gets pretty grungy.
Please help! I would like to know the cause of my betta's sudden death!

Sorry to hear about Bob but really there is no way to know for sure what happened to him at this point. Bettas can live as long as 4-5 years but usually a bit less. Maybe it was just old age. I'm sure you'll find another betta that you will enjoy keeping. Best of luck!

So sorry to hear about Bob. I have had Betta fish for quite some time and the ones I have kept do typically live about 2-3 years. It sounds as though you were taking good care of Bob, so I am not sure what may have made him die suddenly. Were you using a product to remove the chlorine from tap water when cleaning the tank? It is also important to maintain their water temperature. I have heard that Betta fish are very sensitive to sudden temperature changes and do best when their water is kept between 75-80 degrees. I actually do not use a heater with my Bettas, but I am sure to leave their tank in the warmest part of my house. Hope this helps a little!

There isn't a mirror close to his bowl is there? When Betta's see their reflection, they think it is a different fish, and want to fight. He might have hit the bowl to hard and hurt himself badly. Do you have a bowl that has a filter on it? Betta fish cannot be put in a tank/bowl that has the water filter, because they get stuck on the filter part that sticks down in the water, and they drown because their fins are soo big and wavy that they are too weak to be able to get loose from the suction of the filter. I know, they are fish, but betta fish need oxygen to survive, that is why they go to the top often just to take a breath of air. My fish died that way once...I had him for 2 years, so I am not sure if it was old age either since my fish lived that long.

the place you treating him for fin rot? Fish can die of fin rot whether it incredibly is left untreated. I doubt he have been given suck in the plant. Edit:loss of oxygen is under no circumstances a situation with bettas by using fact they have a gland on the dazzling of their head that enables them to breath from the air and get oxygen from the air, so as that they've the potential to stay in low oxygenated waters.

If you changed his food type (like pellets to flakes) that could be the problem. I have had the experience of a beta fish dying, you know they have to be in sterile water to survive, and just the slightest bit of soap(from cleaning the tank)could also be the case.

sounds like you had a bit of a bacteria problem if his head was being eaten off. i think he might of been happier with more than one flake -- i don't know exactly how that translates to pellets or frozen food. you can keep the bacteria down with some melafix or some aquarium salt.

Did you ever test your water? Perhaps you weren't cleaning it enough, especially if you have multiple fish in a small tank.

Might have been old age, they only last for maybe a little longer than what you had him for. If he lasted that long though, it probably wasn't something you did. Sorry for your loss.

Betta's only have an expected life of around a year. It was probably old age that finished him.
