Hegemony? ha ha. Sorry but i cannot understand why people still believe that this can be work. It doesn't work for Hitler and just as little after him.
The USA is a big economical power in the world, but not the only one.
I think the real problem is, that the most "Americans" are not educated enough to know, that they still is another world outside their border. ;-)
Everyone who know Kant, Voltaire, etc. should understand that the USA is dependent on other countries and in the opposite too.
Because I am it sorrow, to excuse me continuing for your error behavior and the disregard of human rights.
But now i come to the end, because my English is not good enough to explain where the real problem is. Give me two or three month and then i give you a understandable, logical answer. ;-)

People don't realize how important US hegemony is, particularly in the international currency market. Hegemony refers to leadership. Since abandoning the gold standard, it has been the dollar's hegemony in the currency market that sets the value of the dollar.
You are absolutely correct in your assumption that Kyoto was directed at the US economy and that the EU is trying to get the Euro to replace the dollar most importantly in the international oil trade.
Unfortunately, most Americans think US hegemony refers to being the policw of the world. It does not. It's the foundation of our entire economy and way of life. Without it you can say goodbye to the American dream.

Realize?...
The liberals are in the forefront of trying to reduce U.S. strength and world leadership. It's not like they're simply unaware of the impact of their ideas, rhetoric and political activity.
Today's vote on the "non-binding resolution" against the build-up in Iraq is INTENDED to let the rest of the world know that we feel guilty for trying to impose our view elsewhere.
The most extreme liberal mindset is one of shame. They are ashamed that the U.S. is the locus of world economic activity. They are ashamed that the U.S. is the world's #1 military power. They are ashamed that the U.S. has the courage and chutzpah to support Israel in the face of anti-Semitic forces that threaten her. They are ashamed that the U.S. government and the average U.S. citizen stands against the moral decay that threatens all civilized cultures. And they are ashamed that the U.S. still sees itself as "one nation under God".
Do the liberals "realize" the effect of their actions? I'd go so far as to say that the reduction of the U.S. stature in the world is the GOAL, not some unintended consequence of their programs.
The U.N and the E.U. are happily along for the ride on the liberal express!

When Clinton left office, America was the most admired and respected nation on earth, more so than at any time since immediately after WWII. Bush and the Republicans are the only ones responsible for the destruction of America’s reputation and influence.
When are you guys going to grow up and act like adults? When will you outgrow the name-calling and excuse making, and admit that it was your own ignorance, arrogance, bigotry and greed that has done so much damage to America?
If nothing else, can’t you at least quit making it worse. The hole is deep enough – you can stop digging now.

To the extent your claim--that others are trying to eliminate US hegemony--is true--that's as it should be.
No one appointed the US as the worl'ds policeman. Other people have every right to run their own lives as they see fit without us trying to interfere.

No they don't realize it or don't care.
They'll be the first ones to cry about it when it's too late and of course blame someone else other than themselves (who created this mess)
