the first guy is correct. I do engine management systems development work, and sometimes an engineer will flood out the engine trying to get it started and then BOOM! it blew the muffler wide open. We had another truck do the same thing except when it backfired, it sounded like a bomb went off!!!!

If you mean the muffler blowing up, it is usually caused by:
1. High mileage engine not running efficiently
2. Excessive UNBURNED fuel getting into the exhaust
3. Bad or burnt Exhaust Valve and/or seats
4. On Carburetor equipped engines, turning the ignition key off, pumping the accelerator, then turning the key back on
5. Ignition timing incorrect
6. Firing order incorrect
7. Someone messing with you
8. Bad or contaminated fuel

either by a sever backfire or raw gas getting into the system then being ignited by a piece of glowing carbon from engine combustion.
