c. is short for "circa", a Latin word meaning "around." So c1960 means "around 1960."

BC stands for "Before Christ."

AD does NOT stand for "after death." It stands for "Anno Domini" which is Latin for "in the year of our Lord." The year commonly thought to be Jesus' birth is designated year 1 AD.

OK this is just a comment on the other answers I suspect I'll get some thumbs down. but...

OMG where have these people been educated on AD "Anno Domini" meaning In The year of our Lord?!?! Whats this After Death?!?! Does that even make sense? He lived what an estimated 35 years? So before Christ and after death... What about the years in between. Anyway. I have no idea where the "After Death" thing came from but it bugs me... OK I step off my soap box. Thanks for letting me rant!

Give Librarian the best answer on this one! She got it right with links first. Good Job!

c. year of (is what I learned.)

B.C. Before Christ

A. D. - anno domino (In the year of the lord) Typically the year 1 (Christ was BORN not died as some are saying) We are in the 2007th year AD since Christ was born.

A.D. = Anno Domini, or, "in the year of our Lord." This is commonly also stated as c.e., or "Common Era" to be more politically correct.

B.C. = Before Christ, also, B.C.E, Before Common Era.

1 AD is the year most consider Jesus Christ was born. It means "after death". 'BC' means 'before christ'. "C" means 'circa', or 'around'.

Examples:

394B.C. is 394 years before Jesus Christ's birth.
2007 A.D. is this year.
c.1960 means around 1960. It could be 1978, 1979, 1960, 1961, 1962....anywhere around 1960.

1100 BC or BCE = 1100 years before Christ or Before the Common Era

1100 AD = 1100 years after death (of Christ)
