I am a fair skinned African and my colour was an issue (for people) and my parents (at birth). My nicknames (home and away) ranged from mixed to half-baked, point 5 or tomato. My dad accused mum of having a bit on the side when I was born and that sent their relationship to the dogs and my position in the pack was precarious. I have traced the family tree four generations and they are all as African as can be. I never know what to make of peoples obsession with skin colour coz frankly it is at the top of my senseless list.

No. I don't give them the chance. If the issue of race comes up, I just say, "I'm part of the All-American melting pot and a Heinz 57. I don't know all the nationalities in my blood line. I try to not be racist against anyone, because we may be related." Then I laugh.

There are very few people today who are not of some mixure or another. Race should not be an issue. The person within should.

Since my skin color is pretty close to the little avatar I have the answer is definitely no! But my aunts have very very fair skin and when they were younger that were asked if they were "mixed" and they did sometimes find it offensive. As though they weren't "officially" African American or something.

Never happened to me, but my neice has often been asked if she is part black. She has naturally olive-toned skin, with dark brown eyes and full lips, and thick dark brown hair. Both of her parents are as white as can be. She is 100% caucasian. My son has long, thick eyelashes, and he is often asked if he wears mascara. He doesn't. He is just blessed with beautiful eyes. People ask stupid questions. The trick is not to be offended by them, because we should all celebrate who we are, whatever race we are, whatever anything we are.

I'm as white as white gets so there's never any confusion.

I guess people think African Americans should have very dark skin so if your skin color is lighter they assume there's some white in there somewhere...

I hate that term it is ignorant. Only ones 'mixed' in the head would look at someone as being mixed.

Tell them you are 100% native earthling.

Yes. At this point every one is. So it shouldn't really matter. I identify more with the way I live my life and the choices I have made, or the way I make decisions then my ethnic background.
Aloha.
