I have a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire and the "SERVICE" light came on when I shifted into gear... When I first shifted into gear my driving lights indicator blinked about 9 or 10 times and then the Service light came on. Does anybody have a clue what this means???
I called my neighbor who is a mechanic at work and he said he'll have to look it up and he'll get back to me when he gets home on SUNDAY lol!! but I should drive it, the problem whatever it is isn't a big deal...Thank you for any help

some gm cars have a "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" and a "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON" light. If the driving lights indicator was blicking then it is probably a "SERVICE VEHICLE LIGHT" and you may just have a headlight out. My mom's grand am did that. she said it was the service engine soon light and I checked all the computer modules for codes and there weren't any. After looking closely at the dash, it was the service VEHICLE soon light and she had a headlight burned out.

A blinking Service Engine soon (SES) lamp is a catalysis damaging light, the SES light will only blink when you have a misfire in your engine. That would make sence since you were under load, accellerating the car. The light flashes telling you to get it serviced as soon as possible, as a major misfire is occuring and it can damage the catalytic converter. Take to a trained Auto Tech and have the computer control system checked for codes and repaired. Good luck

Does It start - run - stop the same as it did before the light came on? If so, it "MAY" not be anything major.
If the performance is poor and you notice symptoms like:
Hard starting, poor acceleration, poor gas mileage... DO NOT keep driving it. You have at least ONE computer problem and if you continue driving you will cause a SNOW BALL affect. Something else will go wrong then another until it will not start.
Be smart and be safe!

It's hard to diagnose this type of problem without reading the diagnostic codes responsible for tripping the service light. Two options, A shop of your choice to run a computer diagnostic check,( $49.95 to $69.95) or check to see if a local high school has an auto shop. They will do it for you at no charge as it gives the instructor a learning tool for his students. Once you have the code and its meaning, proper repairs or adjustments can be made.

It is most likely a smog control problem so it will not hurt the car. Check your fluids just to make sure and as long as you have everything you should be OK.
To know the exact problem we need to know the exact number of times it blinked - it stands for a code which indicates the problem.

When the service light comes on it means you have to go get it checked out at a garage.
