The last name of the Russian royal family. The last Romanov tsar and his family were killed by the communists when they took over Russia. They were put in a basement and shot--riddled with bullets.

For many years it was believed that one of the young girls, Anastasia, escaped. When the bones were found a few years ago one of the girls was missing, but it was not accepted that it was Anastasia who escaped or what the significance is of the bones of the missing girl. Supposedly DNA said Anastasia was dead, but DNA can only say a Romanov was dead, and it might have been here.

When a young woman from a mental institution who had amnesia was found and it was thought that she was Anastasia it caused a great stir in Europe. Whether she was or wasn't Anastasia had great meaning for a great many people--and of course the Romanov fortune was at the center. So, some accepted her and some didn't.

It was never proved one way or another. However, I think it was her, and the reason is that I had a friend, a defunct prince, who knew her, had met her socially and spent time with her.
He said a royal knows a royal. That many things can be faked, but that there are some which cannot. And in his estimation she was Anastasia.

So the mystery remains. At least for some of us.

The House of Romanov was the second and last imperial dynasty of Russia, which ruled the country for five generations from 1613 to 1760. From 1760 to 1917 Russia was ruled by a line of the House of Oldenburg (of which Prince Charles is also a member) descended from the marriage of a Romanov grand duchess to the Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. This line was officially also called Romanov, although genealogists sometimes style it, more accurately, Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov.

The Romanov family continues to exist today. The proper line of succession to the Russian throne is contested, but despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, it seems unlikely that the Romanovs will regain the throne in the near future. The Russian people have so far evidenced little popular support for the resurrection of a Russian monarchy, even on a constitutional basis.
