I went on a field trip monday to a prison for my Criminal Justice class and near the prison was a hopsital for "crazy" people. I was just wondering if anyone knows some of the characteristics of a person who needs to be there and what they have to do to be considered "insane".

People are put in those hospitals because they are a danger to themselves or others. They can also voluntarily sign themselves in but that's rarer because of the expense and the lack of available beds.

Well my Great-Grandfather was admitted because he was hipnotized by a lady(she robbed them). It really affected him in a bad way. He wouldn't eat, sleep, and he was afraid to look people in the eye. He died in an Asylum after he was there for two weeks. My third-cousin was put in an asylum because he was bi-polar, and hard to control, he wouldn't take his medication for his mom. He was abusive to himself and others. My Aunt because she was bipolar, and drove around with a gun, and called the police to say that she was going to commit suicide. My Uncle because he had a breakdown. It was very weird, I don't remember why exactly he was there. But he got better, I think a lot of it was depression. Boy my family does sound great doesn't it.

A person could willingly commit himself if he believes he is in need of it. Persons are sometimes involuntarily committed if they are seen as a danger to themselves or others. Family members may commit a relative who has had a break from reality.

In most states, if they're committed it's because they are a danger to themselves or others due to their mental illness.

A person can commit themselves too.

Otherwise, you can be crazy as a loon and they'll let you loose.
