Our kid is 12. She's always loved scary everything - but we are very careful about what we let her watch. We allow her to watch suspensful stuff - like "Watcher in the Woods" and Arachnophobia. But no slasher stuff. Jason and Chucky and Freddie - if parents let their children (younger than 16 or so) watch those types of films - my opinion is that they are simply irresponsible, not taking time to think about it, and they're giving in to the kid's requests - because it seems easier. We watch A LOT of movies at our house. We have managed to keep our child entertained with age appropriate films. What's the rush? Their little brains really aren't ready for a lot of the media and films that are out there.

It depends on their age and how scary the movie. I think it's ridiculous to allow a child under the age of 10 to watch something really scary.

Yes I do when they are a certain age. I watched them when I was a child (like poltergeist and nightmare on elmstreet) so it depends on which scary movies. One of my sons was so afraid of them that he cried when Scary Movie 3 was on tv so of course I wont let him watch them. It depends on the child.

That's funny, as this conversation has recently come up in our household because my 7 year old son wants to watch them.
I say Yes. I watched them when I was young (Poltergeist at age 5!! And I loved it!!) He's old enough to understand that it's fiction. I probably wouldn't let him watch realistic ones (like Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal) or ones that are just pure gore like Saw. But I don't think a little Jason or Freddie Kreuger is going to hurt at all.
My husband doesn't agree..he says he's too young. I said, "But I watched them when I was young!"
He said, "Yeah, but you're different."
I said, "How do you know Son is not different, like me?"
That had him stumped!

Depends on how old they are. I don't knik anyone under 13 should see scary movies period. When my son reaches that age, I'll first consider the movie and whether he's mature enough to handle it.

Yes kids can watch horror movies. But if they are very sensitive I would not recommend them watching until they are at leat 12 years old.
