yes they can, but how old is your fridge? it's unlikely to be gas if it is quite new and well maintained. If you have cleaned the inside of the fridge and it still smells - check inside the rubber seals around the door, spilt milk etc can often get trapped there especially if there is a crack in the seal. A Qtip can be quite useful in cleaning the seals - hope this helps.

yes, but it is more likely a spill that has been missed.

Clean the fridge well with soapy water and bicarbonate of soda (baking powder). Then leave a small container with a little bit of bicarb in the back.

This should cure the problem.

If you ever switch the fridge off for any reason, leave the door open.

There is probably something giving off gas but it is not the refrigerant. Look under and behind the crisper drawers and you will probably find an orange or lemon that has somehow fallen there and has been there for a while.

Refrigerant gas does not have an odor and is not dangerous.

if a fridge gets damaged while moving the coolant can leak, which is bad!! get it fixed asap or it could just be you had the fridge turned off whith the door shut, this causes a bad smell due to mould and mildew forming.

it's very unlikely you're smelling a refrigerant and much more likely your smelling something burning off the condenser in the back. Could be dust, could be insuation of some wires, could be anything...but probably not your refrigerant.

Check that you have nothing in there going rotten. If clean then the refridgerant may be leaking. Call an engineer. But first, check your spelling!
