If the first gear synchro pop's out once in a while is that really bad? How much would it be to be fixed? I am looking on buying a 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX AWD but the guy said thats the only problem and i wanna know how much would it be to fix it. He wants $6,000 for it and has 104K. Is it worth it? Its a very nice car clean pain out side and inside is well keep. He said he let it go for $5,500 but he would throw in ported cliped 20G turbo with a ported manifold with an external wastgate for $6,000. Thanks alot to everyone tha answeres my question.

Firstly, it has 104k on the engine. Don't put any kind of power booster on it unless you carry a large magnet with you to pick up all the engine pieces that are going to fly when the engine blows. Second, the popping out of first isn't a transmission problem. Before buying it, have the engine/transmission mounts checked. A weak mount will allow the engine/trans assembly to lean too far back toward the firewall, especially in high torque mode (first gear, hard acceleration) cauing the shift rods to be too short and pulling the selector lever on the trans to pull back into neutral.

Depending on how you use it, it could be a decent deal. I own a 1G GSX and I race mine. The trans could be a difficult/expensive repair if you aren't careful, but if you get it fixed, the car will last you a while if you drive like a human. Mine has 145K on it and aside from replacing a clutch, I haven't had trouble with the engine or the trans. If you plan on beating the car, there are aftermarket companies that have upgraded parts (including synchros). Check www.buschurracing.com. As far as the mods go, they are only as good as the supporting mods (i.e. fuel pump, injectors, airflow, etc).

This car books at around $4500 in good condition with 104K on the odometer. A bad syncronizer can be replaced for about $500, but generally, they will find other issues once they get inside. Anytime you are dealing with a transmission, you can expect to pay at least $1500. So, I would not consider this a good deal. If you are interested in the car, make the owner take it to a shop and get a written estimate to reapair the tranny, then you can hold that shop to the written estimate.

For the value of the car check with on line Kelly Blue book prices for private party sales. For the transmission get a few quotes to fix from your local mechanics. Stay away from the turbo as it will just strain the engine as well as require the use of premium gas.

$6,000 is way too much for this vehicle with no defects whatsoever. BTW, the described trans problem has nothing to do with the synchro ring - it's the fork/shaft wear, and I'd be very much surprised if repairs cost less than $1,500.

it's not worth it. that is a fast car even w/o all those mods, but they are known to have problems with the AWD tranny(trust me). Plus upgrades for mistsu ecplipse are cheap anyway, so he's not doing you any favors by throwing all that extra stuff in. that is low miles however for a mitsu motor, but if there is turbo-upgrades, you are going to still spend even more money on upgrading internals so your pistons/rods don't crap out on you.

that car isnt even close to worth it. The eclipses are pretty slow, not that reliable, and a bad synchro isnt a good sign. Prob means he beat the absolute hell out of that car. I would stray away from it.
