I know the NBA banned him from coming, but was he going to host a show, or be an emcee or something? Or did they just ban him from attending the game?

Yeah, he was supposed to be a part of the NBA Cares program.
I don't think you want a guy stating how much he hates certain groups of people to state that your organization cares about treating everyone well no matter what the diversity.

Hardaway had been scheduled to do some promotional appearances. He's been relieved of those duties.
