Until he addresses and acknowledges his drinking problem, you're going to have an awful, up-and-down unpredictable relationship with him. The best thing I can tell you to do is stand your ground and stand up for yourself. If he refuses to listen....LEAVE! From personal experience, I can tell you that life with an alcoholic will do a real number on YOU. You are constantly talking to the alcohol and not to the person. It's sad, it's unfair, but it's a fact of life. Keep yourself healthy and think of yourself first.

Personally, I would break up with him. That sounds harsh, but here's something you may not have considered:

You are choosing to date someone who drinks and drives. That means you ARE A PERSON WHO chooses to date someone who drinks and drives.

How would you "come across as a &*%^" for expressing a problem with behavior that is illegal and incredibly dangerous to others? Easily--by saying anything. You're the party pooper, the Goodie Two-Shoes. Your boyfriend isn't going to hug you and tell you you're simply brilliant for coming up with the idea of NOT drinking and driving.

What you are coming across as is a young person with too little self-esteem and ethics of her own to say, "Babe, it's just wrong. I'm not the person who supports this by letting it go by."

Stand up. Save a life by calling the cops the next time it happens, because that may be the time when he hits someone and really comes off as a *&%^.

Just tell him how you feel and hopefully he'll respect that. Tell him that if he gets drunk while out with his friends to call you and you'll come get him. Unfortunately, he might not learn his lesson til something bad happens to him.
I learned my lesson the hard way...two broken ankles, a broken sternum and three broken ribs, and a totaled car later I finally decided not to do that anymore. I decided its not my thing!

Dump him now. If you don't, he'll eventually be calling and bothering you from jail.

If he prefers drinking to you, then the answer is obvious. Tell him to get into rehab or get rid of him.
