"So long" is slang for "goodbye"
I've always thought of it as a nice way to say "goodbye" to an old friend. Like, "So long old friend, until we meet again"
It may not be a long time before you see them again, but it feels like a long time.

it could have a couple of meaning, it all depends on the text it's used in.
1. Good Bye
2. how long it is; example: 'the string is so long.'
