It has to do with the laws of motion. Momentum helps carry you up the stairs so you are exerting less physical force to help you get up the stairs. That is why you get more physical excercise when you walk up stairs vs running up stairs.

because it's easier than walking because they have momentum as they run thereby requiring them put less energy into puling themselves up the next step.
