It differs, but...
Most security cameras are not monitoring constantly. Larger stores will have security staff that glance at the monitors on a regular basis. Walgreens, unless in an area with high crime, isn't likely to have a full-time person watching monitors.
However, there is almost always tape. So, even if not monitored constantly, the tapes are reviewed. Maybe not every day. And maybe not every tape. But if they have reason to suspect something, you better believe that the tape will be viewed.
So, if you've done something (or are planning on it), you should assume that there is a tape of you doing it. Just because they haven't come for you yet, doesn't mean that they can't or won't.

Some department stores do have people monitoring thier cameras such as target. If you ever go into target, you'll notice that there are sercurity personal. Other stores don't monitor thier cameras, but have undercover people walking around watching suspisious customers. If they see sombody stealing, then they catch them as they leave. Then they will use the tapes from the cameras for evidence in court. Some stores even have hidden areas like behind mirrors where employees will sit and watch without you knowing. My mother actually did that for a while until she got caught sleeping.

Usually it depends on the store and how much of a shoplifting problem they have. It also depends on where the cameras are located. For example, cameras located above cashiers are used to monitor casier activity and are more often logged (recorded), but not directly monitored. Cameras around the store are directly monitored if the store manager wants to pay someone to monitor them. Otherwise, they just get recorded and are reviewed only if there was a burglary or suspicious activity. As much as I hat to post this, some cameras are just "dummies". They are fake cameras or camera domes put in as a low cost deterrent to shop lifters.
Bottom line, the means in which security cameras are monitored depends on the security managers of that specific facility. Their decision is usually based on the financial loss realized by shoplifting, employee theft or robberies.

What, did you steal a pack of $1.00 pens from the Dollor Store? To answer your question: yes and no. If they thought it was a big enough deal, they could show the tape to the police, who could then ID you and put a warrent out for your arrest. On the other hand, the chances of the Dollar Store carring enough about $1.00 worth of pens to go to the police is next to zero. My advise to you is this: Don't steal items from the Dollar Store or anywhere else. It is just an unwelcome invitation to get caught and thrown in jail.

I know at places like Ross, they have someone there scanning, and most of the cameras can see everywhere, they have great distance and resoltution. They might not catch everyone by having someone watching a screen, but all cameras record, so they can go back and look at a specific time and area if they think something might have happened there.

Most of the time they are being watched by a person.. and if they see something suspicious they will review the tape.. you cant hide from the cameras. They have a zoom that can read the date on a quarter if it was laying on the floor.. DD

Sometimes someone is watching them in a big place like Wal-Mart or Costco, but in a smaller place they'll have it for evidence for the people they catch, for when they go to court.
