It could be that you have to defrag your computer or you have too much stuff on your computer that you do not have enough memory to run DVDs or Cd's properly.

either you have spyware (can cause ur DVD-R writer) to not work properly if an excess of spyware is on your computer or not enough power, as far as sporadic playing, u might just not have enough POWER ( HARD DRIVE DATA) to play them. let's say for instance you have a 250GB Hard Drive, well if you use 200 of that 250 ,well it's going to take a lot of power to load all of that, and when u try and open certain programs it might possibly SKIP, or something, don't know what to tell u, either take some stuff off, or get more storage space. OH yeah and try and defrag see if that helps!

I agree with "The Informer". Try a cleaning disc first. The laser eye may be dirty. If this doesn't fix it, you probably have a failing drive, or motherboard.

I sure WISH every computer problem was as easy as running spyware removal software or defrag like some of these pea brains seem to think.

I had this with my old computer. I had to replace the DVD/CD. I would take it somewhere and ask if it can be repaired or replaced. You can buy them in any good computer store and do it yourself, if you know how.
