They are horizontal lines that go across the back windshield. I've always wondered about this but never asked anyone?

That's for your rear defrost. You should have a button on your dashboard that looks like a griddle. Push it and something will light up showing that your rear defroster is on.

It works through electrically resistant wires that heat up when an electrical current is applied.

There are some lines that are like little wires placed in the glass used to defrost the back window, others are antena for the radio or GPS or Onstar type services. It all depends on the model of your car.

They are the defroster. Little heating lines, when it is frosty, look out the back window and you can see it melt on the lines first.

They defrost the window. You should have a button on your dash that says rear window defrost or something with a picture similar to your window

Rear window defroster....You shoud have a switch for it somewhere,usually next to the heater.
