I'm sure it would depend on the friend, but I don't know if a lot of men would be comfortable if a female friend said that she loved him. I mean love in the sense that you enjoy spending time with that person. I wonder if men can think of love in non-sexual terms unless the woman happens to be his mother or his sister or another close female relative.

Not at all ~ at first, it might be slightly awkward to have strong connection and feelings towards him but in the end of the day, it'll be okay. If a girl loves to just hang out together and spend time with him ~ why not? It also relies on your purpose and main objective -- if it's true that you love him to be just a best bud, I can't see any points that stand your way...

By the way, if he's conservative and bit assertive about everything, don't tell him directly that you love to be his friend ~ it's way better to show this feeling rather than strange uttering of love stuffs and things --- well, sometimes we've to be pessimist in case you couldn't save your embarrassment!

I like what was said above..."I love being your friend."

That makes it clear that it is non-sexual. It does not carry the connotations that "platonic" does. People who use that term mean things like, I don't mind being with you, but you're not really attractive. It is often used to try to let a person down..."I do love you...but in a platonic way."
