It is typical for your CPU usage to be high when your computer first starts up. This is because many programs and services are set to start up when you boot your machine. Within a minute or two of logging in, your CPU usage should be back to normal. If your CPU usage remains at or near 100% for a long time after startup, use the task manager to determine which process is the CPU hog.

It is likely your computer is infected with adware, spyware or both. If you have any security software then scan your computer with it. You will need an antivirus and antispyware. If you don't have one, there are several free programs available. In addition, you need a firewall. There are a number of ways your computer can be infected. For example, using peer to peer file sharing, downloading a "free file" or opening an e-mail attachment. Here are some security software which are free and very effective. Choose at least one antivirus and antispware program. Download and install them. Run a scan with each one and be sure to quarantine any suspicious files.

1. Antivirus http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/ (AVG antivirus is a good choice)

2. Antispyware http://www.filehippo.com/software/antispyware/ (Lavasoft's Ad Aware and Spybot are good choices)

3. Firewall http://www.filehippo.com/software/firewalls/ (Sunbelt Kerio firewall and ZoneAlarm are good choices)

Drop me an e-mail if you have problems setting it up.

Backup your files now.

I am estimating that you have about 20 processes running that you do not need running. These may be harmless or they may be virus's or spyware. I assume you have virus and spyware protection installed on your computer. Start by updating it and running a full scan.

Run "check disk" click both boxes and restart computer.
(will take a long time to run)

Run disk cleanup
Run disk defragmentation

Run
Microsoft OneCare Live, run “full service scan”
Updates windows, virus and spyware scan, disk cleanup, disk fragmentation (if needed), backs up registry and then cleans registry, and checks for open firewall ports.

Malicious Software Removal Tool (run “full scan”)
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

Reboot

Install and run:
Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Enable SDHelper, do not optional tea timer. After installation: update + scan + immunize

SpywareBlaster: Update then open and click “enable all protection”. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SUPERAntiSpyware free version: (update + scan)

Reboot

If you had something that could not be removed in the above scans. Disconnect internet connection, start in safe mode and run again.

Pc Pitstop click on "Running Programs"
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Open msconfig http://www.netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
Disable all programs in list marked "programs that can be disabled to improve computer performance"

Restart.

How is it running now? How many tasks are running?
