Recently my car got hit - backed into. The person who did it drove off, but i know them, and they called me a few minutes after it happened. I was not in my car at the time, so i didn't realize they hit me until after it happened. I live in the state of Minnesota. I've researched a little and by law they did commit the crime of "Hit and Run" but what is the punishment for that crime? How much could they be charged? The damage on my car was about 15000.

First, you would need to get a police report. During this time you should report to the police that you know who did it because the called you. It's going to be pretty hard to proove that they are the one's who did it because it's thier word against yours. So if you really have that they called you obatin a copy of your phone bill with that call as incoming and leave the rest up to the police. Now, some police officers would NOT ask for proof, but hey just to be on the safe side...do it! It may take a extensively long time for this to get done, so don't think it will take a day or two. Other than that i would say file it with your insurance company as a "hit and run" i don't think anything will happen to your premium so don't think that may be a matter, but you will need to get a copy of that police report anyway....Good Luck on your decision!

law is very important, you must always follow it. it is true that it was a hit and run incident (which is NOT a small offence). the damage on your car is surprisingly high. the punishment for that crim can be serouse, im not sure for how long but i know it is in months/years. if you file that report, your friend will be arrested and put into court as the defendant, you as plaintiff. if they lose they will be forced to pay your car and stay in prison depending on the incident. but, do you want to do that to your friend? maybe you could settle it without the government. do what you please, its YOUR case.

The punishment isn't pretty I am sure. Because it was a hit and run. You need to report it to the police. I don't care who it is, if someone hit me and did "15,000" dollars worth of damage and left, they have to pay. It's the law, up-hold it.

$15000 = totaled

i don't really know what you are asking, but if they hit you, then they (or their insurance) would have to pay for the damage.

I am not sure, you might want to get a police report, and you would definitely want to sue them in small claims court if they don't pay you back voluntarily.
